This triptych represents three characters from the play 'The Sound of the Drum from the Tower of the Yoshiwara' (Yagura Daiko Otomo Yoshiwara - 櫓太鼓鳴音吉原) by Kawatake Mokuami (河竹黙阿弥: 1816-93) which debuted at the Ichimura-za in 1866. In that original production Bandō Hikosaburō V played the role of Asahina Tobei (朝日奈藤兵衛), Ichimura Kakitsu IV (市村家橘) as Washi no Chōkichi (鷲ノ長吉) and Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I (河原崎権十郎) as Yume no Ichirobei (夢の市郎兵衛).
