Lyon Collection - another print from this series The prints of this series pair a beautiful courtesan with each month and its most prominent festival. Schaap and van den Bosch date the series between 1818 and 1830. They also say that there are 13 known prints in this series.

A bijin with a roll of paper tissues in her mouth carries a bowl of water to her unseen lover behind a screen. Subject illustrated in Keisai Eisen Ten, Tokyo, 1983. #192.

The covered jar, on the ground to the right of the low table with the blue and white porcelain bowl on it, may be an advertisement for a particular saké dealer or brand. The label reads: 銘酒瀧水 or 'Takimizu saké.'

We have been unable to locate a full set of this beautiful print series anywhere. That does not mean there isn't one, but so far we haven't found it. However, there are 11 prints from this series at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. There are also two similar prints from this series in the collection of Waseda University; one in the Ota Museum; two in the Chiba City Museum; and one in the Ritsumeikan collection; and a different print example in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

There is a bit of confusion about this series because several prints appear to represent the same months. However, this may be due to the fact that the dominant cartouche showing the specifics of each print may represent more than one printing with different designs. Possibly this was due to the popularity of these images.
