In this magnificent set, for the landscape background Kunisada took advantage of the fashionable vogue for prints in the new imported Prussian blue pigment.

Izzard wrote: 'Yamamoto Baiga (1799-1836)... was the eldest son of Iwai Hanshirō V... and took the name Hanshirōshown wearing a long-sleeved summer robe decorated with a pattern composed of the characters of his name, Iwai. On his head he wears a purple silk-cloth (murasaki-bōshi) held in place by a pin decorated with his crest. He carries a fan with a flowering plum design."

The aizuri-e background with a flock of plovers was inspired by a poem by the priest Nōin (能因: 988-ca. 1050-55).
