Victoria and Albert Museum Mokuemon is the figure which is kneeling. He is sometimes known as 'uekiya' (植木屋) or 'the gardener' in some of the related plays. If you click on this image and enlarge it you will see in the darker blue part of his costume large birds, possibly stylized sparrows, as seen from above flying among bamboo plants.
The right-hand missing panel of this diptych, which is missing here, shows Otaka (おたか) who is the concubine of the villain Kō no Moronao, but her true love is Yashichi. Eventually Otaka kills herself out of shame while riding in a palanquin or kago.

This image commemorates a performance at the Kado Theater in 7/1824.
This is from the earlier, privately printed edition - a later, commercial edition, was published without the poems. Instead the names of the actors were prominently displayed.
