Waseda University The curatorial notes at the Museum of Fine Arts say: "One of a set showing six auspicious skits performed to celebrate the name change of Ichimura Takenojô V, formerly Ichimura Uzaemon XII."

****

Takenojō is portraying a saru no shogatsu or monkey at the New Year making this type of print a mitate since one actor cannot have played two characters on stage at the same time.

The title cartouches are framed at their bottoms by tachibana (橘) or mandarin orange flowers. The red cartouche reads: Monjuzaru - 文殊猿 (Monju's Monkey); the green one reads: Kaidō kudari - 街道下り (Girl on the Road to Edo). Takenojō Takenojō V's stage name or yago (屋号) is Tachibana-ya (橘屋), a guid name based on the same floral motif.

****

This print portrays the interval scene between the main and second feature. The main play was Hōraisan Yotsugi Soga (蓬莱山世嗣曽我) performed at the Ichimura-za.
