Metropolitan Museum of Art - incorrectly dated to 1778 Segawa Kikunojō III was also known as Segawa Senjo.

Although the Metropolitan Museum of Art dates this print from 1778 this cannot be correct, because it carries a kiwame censor's seal. Kiwame means approved. The first known use of that seal was 1791 and Shunshō lived until 1792. The curatorial notes at the Met also state that this print may be one panel of a triptych, but without any proof.

The Met's copy of their print entered their collection as a result of the Joseph Pulitzer Bequest in 1918. Much less was known about the fine points of ukiyo-e connoisseurship back then than is known today. Such mistakes are understandable. Often the information provided upon accession was that of the donor and his or her sources.
