National Museums of Scotland This is a single panel from a triptych representing the season of winter. The entire series represents The Four Seasons (四季ノ内). This is written on the screen or background wall just to the right of the character for winter (冬) in a yellow circle.

The National Museums of Scotland say this image represents "...the courtesan Momijigi of Akatsutaya heating a kettle on her brazier..."

On the ground near the brazier is a woven trivet or kanawa (金輪). Generally this describes a metal trivet, but we have chosen this term until we know otherwise. The patter may be called hyūga kamashiki (日向釜敷).
