Biography:

Said to be a female artist, but this is not absolutely confirmed. A student of Toyokuni I, active 1801-18. Not listed in Roberts. Painted in the style of Toyokuni and Utamaro. Almost no information on this artist appears in English.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston records this artist at Utagawa Kunihisa I, but we have been unable to find him/her under this name anywhere else so far. However, until we find out otherwise we are using that name anyway.

Almost all of the signed pieces by this artist show deference to his/her teacher Toyokuni I: Toyokuni monjin Kunihisa ga (豊国門人国久画). (JSV)
