Biography:

This actor held this name from April 1951 to March 2001. The Portland Art Museum says of Utaemon VI as shown in an Ōta Masamitsu print in the Lyon Collection (#1445): "Nakamura Utaemon VI (1917-2001) was the dominant onnagata actor of the second half of the 20th century. Although he was far from handsome--he had a nose like the beak of a hawk--he so thoroughly mastered feminine movements and gestures that he was mesmerizing on stage. He took the stage name Utaemon VI in 1951, only three years before this print was made, and performed under that name until his retirement in December 1988. His extravagant costume and headress in this print is for his role as Yatsuhashi, a famous courtesan who became the obsession of a wealthy farmer."
