Biography:

This actor held this name from 11/1787 to 10/1804. His son-in-law was Nakamura Utaemon IV (1796-1852) who is represented in the Lyon Collection by 13 prints.

In 1782 this actor started under the tutelage of Iwai Hanshirō IV (1747-1800) who gave him the name Iwai Karumo, which he held until he took the name Kiyotarō II. He occasionally played an onnagata, unlike in the two prints by Kunihisa in the Lyon Collection. In 1800 when his first master Hanshirō IV died, he began his studies under Ichikawa Yaozō III. In 11/1804 when his master took the new name of Suketakaya Takasuke II, Kiyotarō took the name Ichikawa Yaozō IV. (JSV)
