Biography:
This actor held this name from 11/1764 to 10/1809. Matsusuke I's first teacher was Onoe Kikugorō I (1717-83). His adopted son was Onoe Kikugorō III (1784-1849). There are more than 25 prints in the Lyon Collection representing that actor. He played both male and female roles and sometimes as a vengeful ghost, one of his specialties. (JSV)

Matsusuke I was portrayed under this name as early as 1765 by Kiyomitsu I, by Kiyotsune in ca. 1765, by Bunchō in 1770, in 1772 by Shunshō, in 1774 by Kiyonaga, by Shunkō in ca. 1776, by Shunjō in 1781, in 1781 by Shun'ei, by Hokusai in 1790, by Sharaku in 1794, by Toyokuni I in 1795, and by both Kunimitsu I and Shuntei in 1808.
