Biography:

Tanosuke II was an actor who worked under this name from 11/1801 to 1/1817. The name Tanosuke was not picked up again until 1859.

One of his grandfathers was Sawamura Sōjūrō II (1713-70: 二代目沢村宗十郎) who is represented in the Lyon Collection by two outstanding Toyokuni I prints. His other grandfather was Arashi Hinasuke I (1741-96: 初代嵐雛助). His half-brother was Sawamura Sōjūrō IV (1784-1812: 四代目沢村宗十郎). His father was Sawamura Sōjūrō III (1753-1801: 三代目沢村宗十郎).

Born in Kyoto Tanosuke II was the third son of Sōjūrō III. His mother was the sister of Arashi Hinasuke I (1741-96)
