Michael Fredholm von Essen wrote on page 243 in The Shogun's Soldiers Volume 1: The Daily Life of Samurai and Soldiers in Edo Period Japan, 1603-1721: "Standing on the Shinbashi Bridge while on his way in Edo, the early traveller would have seen vast areas of recently reclaimed land on his right, in the direction of the bay. This was the area known as Tsukiji ('Constructed Land’). Fishing was the main industry until the 1930s."
Daikokuya had set up shop here in 1863.
