Biography:

The confusion around the identity of Utamaro II has been compounded over the years by repetition of the original mistakes. Sometimes it has been due to the misreading of some of his names, other times... who knows what. In any case, we will try to bring some clarity to this issue. But that said, let it be known that until now the Lyon Collection has referred to this man as also having been called Kitagawa Tetsugorō and/or Koikawa Shunchō. Neither of these names appear in Roberts A Dictionary of Japanese Artists..." We will do our best to remedy this outdated material with more modern scholarship. (JSV)

Koikawa Harumachi II took the name Utamaro II after marrying Utamaro's widow in 1806.

There is a curious footnote (#12, p. 226) to an article by Julie Nelson Davis in The Artist as Professional in Japan: "...there are two [men] who called themselves Utamaro II, so the identity of Utamaro II is of some complexity..." (JSV)
