John Fiorillo and Hendrik Lühl wrote in a special edition of Andon in 2006: "The actor Rikan III was born in Kyoto, the son of a traveling performer. He was a pupil of Onoe Tamizō II and acted as Onoe Wasaburō I to play women's roles in the Kyoto shrine theaters. He left the Onoe family to become Arashi Tokusaburō III with the support of the celebrated Arashi family actor Rikan II (1788-1837), and then finally ascended to the name Rikan III in 1843. He was most skilled in onnagata ('woman's manner') roles and also had some success in powerful male roles because of his strong physical presence, Once established as a star actor, he enjoyed great wealth. Beyond the theatrical sekai, he was expert in calligraphy, samisen performance, the culinary arts, and mathematics."
