The mother in this print is dealing with an unruly child in the wee hours of the morning. Another, more veiled reference to the early hour is the one-eyed ghost of a sake bottle displayed as a child's toy.

This print is illustrated in Time present and time past - Images of a forgotten master: Toyohara Kunichika 1835-1900 by Amy Newland Reigle, p. 68.

The inset reads: なくとおばけが三時升 and is by 薫作.
